A couple of weeks ago, I got a phone call from a large, multi-national retailer in Phoenix Arizona. I was surprised! It’s 6 years since I abandoned my retail career to be a full-time photographer here in Toronto. I used to get a lot of retailers calling me to see if I could make their supply chain more customer-centric.
It wasn’t what I expected. PetSmart were calling me because they had seen my photography on the internet. They wanted a photo of the Leuty Lifeguard Station that they could fill a 16 foot wide wall with. They wanted it for their community board at their new, experimental, boutique-format store on Queen St.
I was so excited not to have to re-engineer their supply chain. I selected 14 photos for them to choose from. It was tricky, because they wanted the focus of the image to be off to the side or down below.
Here are 13 pics that they didn’t choose. If you want to see the one they chose, then you’ll have to head off to PetSmart at Queen & Lee, which opens on the 24th of October. They bought exclusive rights!
Hi,
Julian Mendl,
Your pics are super pretty. I am an artist instructor and recently plan to hold an outdoor painting class on woodbine beach around the little cabin. May I use your photos when I post the class ? I will still keep your name on photos. Looking forward to your reply. Thank you for your time.
Hi Suki. I notice that your website has one of my photographs on it already, without permission. You’re using it for commercial reasons, to sell a product. Please take it down immediately. You should have asked first, and waited for an answer. I wonder who else’s work you’ve stolen?
